Weddings, dinners and meetings · Brandon, MB

Dinner where the wheat was weighed.

A restored brick grain building on Brandon's rail line, with fir beams overhead and one event a day, so the whole building is yours.

Long tables set with wheat and candles under the fir beams and string lights of the hall at dusk

The building

Built in 1911 to grade Manitoba wheat.

Farmers brought samples in off the wagons to be weighed and graded here before the grain went east on the railway. The scale pit is still under the bar floor, behind glass.

The restoration kept everything that could stay: the Douglas fir posts, the brick, the tongue-and-groove ceiling and one wooden grain chute, which now hangs over the bar.

Spaces

The hall, the loft, the yard and a real kitchen

The empty hall in daylight, timber posts in rows and chairs stacked against the brick

The Hall

The main floor: fir planks, a grid of timber posts and the long bar. Tables run the length of the room, or clear the far end for dancing.

The mezzanine loft set for a meeting at one long table above the hall

The Loft

A mezzanine over the hall, with a view down onto the tables and a door that closes for quiet weekday meetings.

The Yard

A gravel courtyard behind the building with string lights, fire tables and the prairie sky for the last hour of daylight.

The Kitchen

A licensed catering kitchen with a pass, two ovens and a walk-in cooler, a few steps from the Hall.

Afterwards

What people wrote once the chairs were stacked

We had 190 people at three long tables and it still felt like a dinner party. Dana walked us through the whole day twice, and on the night we never saw her stop.

Our harvest dinner for the co-op sold out in a week. Honestly the building did half the work.

Marc

Harvest dinner, Souris

I plan a lot of events in Westman and this is the easiest load-in I know. Dock doors at the back, a real kitchen, and someone who picks up the phone.

We held our AGM in the Loft on a Tuesday. The view down into the empty hall was worth the drive from Virden.

Harj

Annual meeting

A Sunday wedding for a good deal less than a Saturday, and not one guest could tell. The yard at sunset did the rest.
