The dentist in the red row house.
Two dentists and a hygienist who take their time, a short walk up from the harbour. New patients and children welcome.

The practice
Four chairs in an old house, kept small on purpose
Dr. Nell Coady opened Harbourside in 2004 with one chair on the ground floor. It has grown to four, and it has stayed in the same house: patients know the stairs, the kettle, and the view of the Narrows from the hygiene room.
Appointments are booked long enough to talk. A check-up and cleaning gets a full hour, so nobody is hurried out of the chair with a question still in their head.

Care and fees
Check-ups, fillings, crowns and the odd emergency
Adult fees, set from the provincial dental fee guide. Your insurance usually covers a share of each.
Check-up and cleaning
An exam, a scale and polish, and x-rays when they are due.
From $195
Children's check-ups
A slow first visit with a ride in the chair and a look at the tools, from the first tooth on.
From $95
White fillings
Tooth-coloured fillings, shade-matched in the chair and usually done in one visit.
From $165
Crowns and bridges
Porcelain crowns made by a lab in Mount Pearl and fitted over two visits.
From $1,250
Root canals
Front and back teeth done here. Complicated molars go to a specialist in town.
From $780
Night and sports guards
Custom-fitted from one impression, ready in about a week.
From $450
Emergency visits
Broken teeth, swelling, lost fillings and toothache.
Exam $120
I hadn't been to a dentist in eleven years and said so on the phone. Nobody lectured me. Bridget took the cleaning slowly, and now my kids ask when they're going back.

Your first visit
Ninety minutes, and no work unless you want it
The day before
We text a short health form, so there is no clipboard in the waiting room.
At the door
Des meets you, puts the kettle on and shows you where everything is.
In the chair
Low-dose digital x-rays, then the dentist goes through them with you on the screen, tooth by tooth.
On the way out
A printed plan: what needs doing, what can wait, and your share of each visit after insurance.

Questions
Before you book
Yes, adults and children. Most new patients get a first visit within two weeks of calling.
Not at all. Tell us when you book and we will leave extra time. Nobody here will lecture you.
Yes, for every visit. Children are welcome from their first tooth.
Your insurance or CDCP card, a list of any medications, and your last dentist's name if you want your old x-rays sent over.
Street parking out front, which is steep in winter. The small lot off the back lane gives step-free access to the ground-floor rooms.
Call the main line. The message gives the on-call dentist's number for that week.
Cracked a tooth? Call before ten.
Morning calls are seen that day, with a price for the fix before we start.
