Barbell gym · Old Strathcona, Edmonton

Old brick. Heavy iron. 5:30 a.m.

Coached barbell classes for first-timers and meet lifters alike, from before sunrise to after supper.

The room

Built to store bricks. Now it holds iron.

Kiln lifts in a 1920s warehouse with the original brick, a rubber floor laid over in-floor heat, and east windows that go from black to blue while the early class works.

No mirrors, no screens, no music you can't turn down. Chalk is welcome, dropping a deadlift is fine, and every lifter gets a rack to themselves, so nobody stands around waiting.

Foundations

Your first month, for $99

New lifters start here, whatever they have done before. It is four weeks, and it ends with a plan.

Week one

An hour, just you and a coach

We look at how you move, ask about old injuries and find starting weights that feel almost too light.

Week two

Learn the four lifts

Squat, bench, deadlift and press in a Foundations group of four, filmed so you can see what the coach sees.

Week three

Join the regular classes

You lift with everyone else, and your coach checks your sheet before every session.

Week four

Retest, then pick a membership

We retest every lift, show you the difference and write your next block. No sales pitch, just the numbers.

From the members

What the early class says

I'd never touched a barbell at 41. Week one they filmed my squat, week four I pulled a hundred kilos. Nobody laughed on the light days.

Renata

Ritchie

The early class is the only reason I get through February.

Marcus

Bonnie Doon

The coaches actually watch you lift. Mine caught a hip shift I'd had for years.

Aaron

Garneau

It's warm, it's quiet at six, and there's always a plug-in for the truck.

Deb

Sherwood Park

I joined the Masters class to carry my own groceries up the stairs. Now I carry my neighbour's too.
