Timber-frame inn · Golden, BC

Nine rooms on the Kicking Horse.

A timber-frame inn on the river bank, a short walk over the footbridge to town, with a wood-fired sauna and gold larches on every slope in October.

The house

Built from the valley it looks at.

Ines and Callum raised the frame in 2009 from Douglas fir cut near Parson, and laid the floors in western larch from the same mill. Every post, brace and peg you can see is holding the house up.

The rooms are plain on purpose: wool blankets, a good reading lamp, a window on the river or the trees. The house is where people end up, in the kitchen in the morning and around the stove after dark.

Rooms

Wool blankets, fir posts, no televisions.

Every rate includes breakfast for everyone in the room.

A day here

From first coffee to boots on the rack

Morning

Breakfast at the long table

Eggs from a farm in Nicholson, sourdough baked the night before, and coffee on the woodstove from seven. Tell us by nine and we pack it for the trail.

Midday

Trail notes, not a brochure

Callum keeps notes on every route he has walked this season, from the larch hikes up at the ski hill to the quiet river trail for days when your legs are done.

Late afternoon

The sauna gets lit

Callum lights the stove at three and the sauna on the bank is hot by five. The river is the cold plunge, if you are brave.

Evening

Boots off, stove on

Wet boots go on the rack by the radiator and are dry by morning. We keep a list of the places in town that serve late, and a flashlight by the door for the walk back.

We came for the larches and stayed in because of that sauna. Callum sketched us a route on the back of a napkin and it was the best day of the trip.

Before you pack

What guests ask us first

When do the larches turn?

Usually from the last week of September to the middle of October, a little earlier up high. Those weeks book first, so write early.

Is there a minimum stay?

Two nights on weekends from December to March and through larch season. One night is fine the rest of the year.

Can we bring the dog?

Two of the River Rooms take dogs, with a $30 cleaning fee per stay. Tell us when you book and there will be a towel by the door.

What if we have to cancel?

Full refund up to fourteen days before you arrive. Inside that, we refund whatever nights we can rebook.

Are you open all year?

Every month except November, when we close for three weeks to oil the floors and rest.

The river side goes first in October.

Tell us your dates and how many of you there are. We answer within the day, from the front desk rather than a booking engine.
