Vine rows in autumn colour running to Lake Ontario at dusk past limestone ledges
Winery and tasting room · Prince Edward County

Pinot planted where the quarry stopped.

Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from thin soil over limestone, poured in a restored barn above Lake Ontario. Open Wednesday to Sunday, and the bar takes walk-ins.

The vineyard

A hand's depth of soil, then limestone.

Quarry Point sits on the old quarry lands at the edge of Lake Ontario, where building stone was cut until the 1920s. What the quarrymen left behind is a few inches of clay loam over fractured limestone, and a wind off the lake that rarely drops.

It is hard ground for a vine. The roots work down through the cracks for water, the crop stays small, and the wines come out lean and mineral with a spine of acidity. We planted the first rows in 2009 and still pick every one by hand.

Each November the crew hills soil over the base of every vine to carry it through a County winter, then pulls it back in spring.

We came for the barn flight and stayed until they closed the doors. They poured the Pinot next to an older bottle from the cellar, and you could taste the lake wind in both.

Not for the barn flight: walk in whenever we are open. The limestone flight and the terrace need a reservation, and summer Saturdays fill a week ahead.
