Weddings and portraits · Prince Edward Island

Twenty Island weddings a year, and yours.

Sandwort Studio photographs weddings, elopements and family portraits across Prince Edward Island from a small studio in Charlottetown. Next summer's dates are open.

How I work

I stay out of the way until the light is worth asking for.

For most of the day I am at the edge of the room, photographing what actually happens: your dad fussing with his tie, your grandmother losing it during the speeches, the flower girls making a break for the field.

Then, about forty minutes before sunset, I borrow the two of you for twenty minutes. On the Island that usually means red sand, dune grass or a dirt lane between potato fields, and it is where most of the photographs you end up framing come from.

We forgot she was there, which is the whole point. Then the gallery arrived and we saw a wedding we had missed: my grandfather crying in the back pew, our friends carrying the cake across the field in the rain.

How it works

From first email to the last dance

  1. Send the date

The date, the venue and roughly how many guests is plenty. You get a straight answer and a suggested collection.

  2. A timeline built on sunset

A month out we plan the day on a video call, working back from the sunset time for your date so the portraits land in the good light.

  3. Candid, with one short list

Group photos take a quarter of an hour from a list you write. Everything else is the day as it happens.

  4. Prints and albums

Order prints from your gallery at lab prices, or design an album with me, proofed twice before it goes to the bindery.

Questions

What couples ask first

Every wedding gets a covered backup, a barn door or a church porch, scouted before the day. Some of my favourite portraits were made in Island rain, and there are umbrellas in the car.

Usually between 600 and 900 for a full day. Every one is edited, and the blinks and near-duplicates are left out.

No. The edit is half of the photograph, so every file you receive is finished and full resolution, yours to print anywhere.

Yes, anywhere in the Maritimes. Off-Island travel is billed at cost, with no day rate on top.

Next summer's Saturdays go first.

Most couples book nine months to a year ahead. Send your date and you will hear back within a day.

Enquire

Tell me about your day

Tell me the venue if you have one. I have probably stood in it at four in the afternoon and know where the light falls.
