Image guide

Choose and prepare website images

Use each image to prove, explain or orient, then make it fast and accessible.

Give every image a job

Sort candidates into four roles before uploading.

  • Proof: finished work, a real storefront, equipment or a team at work.
  • Explanation: a process step, product detail or before-and-after pair with honest context.
  • Orientation: the entrance, service vehicle or landmark that helps a visitor arrive.
  • Mood: a supporting image that sets tone without pretending to show the business.

Confirm rights and customer privacy

Record who took the photo and what licence or permission allows publication. Get clear approval before showing an identifiable customer, their child, home interior, vehicle plate, documents or other personal details.

Stock and AI-generated images can support a concept, but do not present them as completed work, staff, premises or customers. A caption can remove ambiguity when the context is not obvious.

Size for the space, then compress

Do not upload a full camera file for a small card. Crop to the intended aspect ratio, preserve a larger source outside the website, and export a modern format such as WebP when the platform supports it. Inspect faces, text and fine details after compression.

Use responsive image sizes where available so a phone does not download a desktop-sized image. Keep the main subject away from edges that may be cropped on narrow screens.

Write alt text for the image's purpose

Google's image guidance recommends descriptive alt text and relevant nearby copy. Alt text also helps people who cannot see the image. Describe what matters in context, without stuffing service and city keywords.
